The film covers the life of Moses from his birth to his prohibition from entering the land of Israel after his disobedience at the waters of Meribah. The Ten Commandments was acknowledged as the tenth best film in the epic genre.

The Ten Commandments is partially a remake of DeMille's 1923 silent film of the same name.
